Cambodia, Thailand begin border weapons removal talks
(MENAFN) Cambodia and Thailand have initiated discussions on the first stage of removing heavy and destructive weapons from their shared border, marking a key step toward easing military tensions between the two nations.
Senior military officials met Friday in Oddar Meanchey province, with ASEAN observer teams present to monitor, verify, and ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire, as stated by reports. The officials focused on developing a concrete plan for the gradual, phased removal of heavy weaponry, with observation by ASEAN teams to support de-escalation efforts.
Both countries committed to adhering to the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur on October 26, as well as the outcomes of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee’s Second Special Meeting held earlier on October 23. According to reports, the first phase began on October 26 with the withdrawal of two armored vehicles from each side to their original positions.
On Sunday, Cambodia and Thailand formalized a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The agreement follows an unconditional ceasefire reached on July 28 during a trilateral meeting hosted by Malaysia and a 13-point accord signed on August 7, which included the deployment of ASEAN observers to monitor the border ceasefire.
