Cambodia claims new Thai F-16 airstrikes in Preah Vihear
According to local media citing Cambodia’s Defense Ministry, Thai jets targeted Phnom Kmoch and Peak Sbeak areas during morning operations. The ministry stated, “Cambodian forces will continue to protect Cambodia’s territorial integrity and national dignity with unwavering resolve.”
Meanwhile, Thailand reported that its army has destroyed more than six buildings linked to transnational scam networks, including casinos and hotels, since fighting reignited on December 7, as reported by local news outlet The Nation.
Despite reports of calm along the border on Wednesday night, tensions persist. A special Chinese envoy for Asian affairs is scheduled to conduct a shuttle-diplomacy trip to Cambodia and Thailand on Thursday in an effort to mediate and restore peace.
Since the clashes began, at least 55 people have died on both sides. Thai authorities report 21 soldiers and 16 civilians killed, while Cambodia’s Interior Ministry says 18 civilians were killed and 78 injured.
The violence has continued despite US President Donald Trump stating last Friday that leaders from both countries had agreed to halt the fighting. A peace agreement signed in October in Kuala Lumpur, in the presence of Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, was suspended after Thai soldiers were seriously injured in a landmine explosion along the border.
Thai authorities also report that around 18 Cambodian soldiers remain in Thai custody following incidents over the past five months. The longstanding border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has periodically erupted into violence, including clashes in July that left at least 48 people dead.
