Thailand–Cambodia Border Clashes Kill Nineteen Thai Soldiers

(MENAFN) The latest escalation in fighting along the Thailand–Cambodia border has killed at least 19 Thai soldiers and 19 Thai civilians, while forcing more than 270,000 people to flee their homes, Thailand’s defense ministry said on Wednesday, underscoring the growing humanitarian toll of the conflict.

According to the ministry, hostilities intensified overnight as Cambodian forces continued attacks on Thai positions in contested border areas. The violence, which unfolded from late Tuesday into the early hours of Wednesday, involved the use of heavy weapons and prompted Thai troops to respond in what officials described as defensive operations.

Surasant Kongsiri, spokesperson for Thailand’s defense ministry, said Cambodian forces launched repeated assaults using heavy arms, leaving Thai military units with little choice but to fight back in order to protect territorial integrity and civilian populations near the frontier.

The renewed clashes have triggered one of the largest displacement waves in the region in recent years, with authorities reporting that more than a quarter of a million people have been evacuated or have fled voluntarily from affected areas. Emergency shelters have been set up, and local officials are assessing ongoing security and humanitarian needs.

Despite the violence, the Thai military announced on Tuesday that a curfew previously imposed in certain border districts would be lifted with immediate effect, suggesting an attempt to ease restrictions on civilian movement even as tensions remain high.
