Cambodia wants to hold army negotiations with Thailand amid clashes

(MENAFN) Cambodia has proposed holding military negotiations with Thailand in Malaysia as fighting continues along their shared border, while Bangkok insists the talks should take place on Thai soil, media reports said Tuesday.

According to a letter from Cambodian Defense Minister General Tea Seiha, Phnom Penh requested that the upcoming meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) be convened in Kuala Lumpur, citing security concerns stemming from the ongoing clashes.

In the letter addressed to Thai Defense Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit, Cambodia reaffirmed its willingness to proceed with the GBC meeting scheduled for Wednesday but argued that the venue should be moved away from the border area.

“For security reasons, due to the ongoing fighting along the border, this meeting should be held in a safe and neutral venue. In this regard, Malaysia has agreed to host it in Kuala Lumpur,” Gen. Tea Seiha wrote.

Thailand rejected the proposal. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said the GBC meeting would instead take place on Wednesday in Chanthaburi province, eastern Thailand, according to the daily Khaosod.

The dispute over the venue follows a special meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers held in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to address the border tensions. Both Cambodia and Thailand had previously agreed in principle to convene the GBC talks after that meeting.

The last session of the General Border Committee was held in September in Cambodia’s Koh Kong province.
