Cambodia, Thailand agree on seventy-two-Hour border ceasefire

(MENAFN) Thailand and Cambodia agreed on Saturday to implement an immediate 72-hour ceasefire along their shared border, aiming to halt three weeks of deadly clashes that have resulted in numerous deaths and injuries, according to official statements.

The announcement came in a joint statement following a session of the 3rd Special General Border Committee (GBC), a body co-led by the defense ministers of both countries, as stated by Cambodian authorities. The ceasefire is set to begin Saturday at noon local time (0500 GMT).

Under the agreement, both sides have pledged to suspend all armed operations and refrain from unprovoked firing, troop movements, or advances toward each other’s positions. The arrangement covers the entire border region, including military sites, civilian areas, and infrastructure.

The recent fighting, which reignited on December 8 following a border skirmish that injured two Thai soldiers, has claimed approximately 99 lives over the past 20 days. Thai authorities report that 26 soldiers and one civilian were killed, with an additional 41 civilians dying from collateral damage. Cambodia’s Interior Ministry confirmed that 31 Cambodian civilians were killed.

The clashes have displaced nearly one million people on both sides of the border. Thailand and Cambodia have a history of long-standing border disputes, with previous outbreaks of violence, including a July confrontation that left at least 48 people dead.
