Deal to suspend clashes between Cambodia, Thailand comes into effect

(MENAFN) An agreement to immediately suspend hostilities between Cambodia and Thailand came into force on Saturday, bringing an end to nearly three weeks of border violence that resulted in dozens of fatalities and numerous injuries, as stated by reports.

The truce was formalized following a session of a bilateral border mechanism co-led by the two countries’ defense ministers, with the outcome outlined in a joint declaration released by Cambodian authorities.

The ceasefire began at 12.00 noon local time (0500GMT) on Saturday.

Under the terms of the deal, both sides pledged to fully stop military actions and refrain from any unprovoked attacks, forward troop movements, or maneuvers toward each other’s positions.

The suspension of fighting applies along the entire shared border and extends protection to military installations, civilian populations, and infrastructure, according to the statement.

The arrangement also stipulates that Thailand will hand back 18 Cambodian soldiers who have been held in Thai custody since July, once the ceasefire has remained intact for a continuous 72-hour period.

As part of broader efforts to reduce tensions, both governments agreed to keep their forces at current locations, with no additional deployments or patrols advancing toward opposing lines.

The joint declaration stressed that the ceasefire does not affect or prejudge unresolved border demarcation disputes.

In addition, both sides committed to restarting surveying and boundary-marking activities through their joint commission as soon as possible. Priority will be given to contested areas inhabited by civilians, with guarantees for the safety of survey teams, including protection from landmines.

The agreement further provides for displaced residents to return to their homes and livelihoods safely and with dignity.

Earlier on Saturday, a Cambodian Defense Ministry spokesperson accused Thai forces of launching heavy attacks, alleging that roughly 500 artillery shells were fired into multiple border zones, drones released 10 warheads, and F-16 fighter jets conducted strikes near civilian areas, according to official statements.
