Cambodia, Thailand Announce 72-Hour Ceasefire
The announcement came through a joint declaration following a meeting of the 3rd Special General Border Committee (GBC), a body co-led by the defense ministers of both Southeast Asian nations, according to the Cambodian Prime Minister’s office.
The ceasefire is set to begin on Saturday at noon local time (0500 GMT).
As part of the agreement, both parties have vowed to stop all military actions and avoid unprovoked shooting, troop advances, or any movements toward each other’s positions.
The truce will be enforced across all border areas and will include military targets, civilians, and infrastructure, the statement noted.
Since clashes resumed on Dec. 8, a day after a border altercation injured two Thai soldiers, roughly 99 people have lost their lives in the fighting.
Thai authorities reported that 26 Thai soldiers and one civilian were killed, while 41 additional civilians died due to “collateral effects" amid the border skirmishes.
Meanwhile, Cambodia’s Interior Ministry confirmed that 31 Cambodian civilians have also perished in the conflict.
